Black Lab Blog from the Black Dogs

Black Dogs is a Leeds art collective comprising of artists: Andy Abbott, Michael Burkitt, Yvonne Carmichael, James Hill, Richard Ormrod, Bryony Pritchard, Dave Ronalds and Mick Welbourn they work with interventions and have produced such works as the Tower Works Interventions. Holbeck and Leeds City Centre, Jan - Sept 2009 where they worked with the Italianate chimneys that are located on the south side of Leeds.
The design for these chimneys are based on the Giotto Tower in Florence, Italy, the intervention was that 3 times a day the Florentine Campanile would resound from the tower in Leeds as a means to reconnect the belltower to its larger sibling in Florence.
here is some information about the tours they conducted as part of the intervention, taken from the Black Dogs website:

'In June and September the group offered tours around Holbeck and the City Centre that took in the viewpoints from which the chimneys of Tower Works are visible. Two guides delivered information alternating between history relating to Leeds and the sites that would be visible stood in the same spot in Florence. The events were also used as opportunities for participants to share their knowledge, experiences and stories relating to the area'

The Tower Works Intervention was a particularly successful piece by the collective that gained quite alot of public interest and recognition. They are now working on their next project which will take place over the next three months. It looks to intervene with a group of selected participents once more by exchanging art knowledge and skills with them, almost like a free mini art school. The project will be held at the Round Foundry, Holbeck, Leeds. To keep up to date with this next project follow there blog at The Black Lab
