Last week was a busy time, what with putting together numerous portfolios, writing essays and doing work. I did however find time last weekend to go to two current exhibitions at the Ingleby Gallery and the Fruitmarket Gallery.
The first was Peter Liversidge's proposal exhibition The Thrill Of It All. A highly acclaimed exhibition that has had the critics astounded and has been mentioned on BBC 6 musics sunday show. Liversidge has seemed to burst onto the art scence. His work consists of sending the gallery in question a large number of proposals for example one was 'I propose to drive all the hire cars in Edinburgh to Glasgow and leave them there'. Some of these proposals he will come to realise and are possible some of them are not. A beautifully simple idea that is well executed by the artist, and will have you thinking, 'shit why didnt I think of that', well at least you will when you see the prices of the work. However you cant help but feel that out of roughly 200 proposals he had sent to the Ingleby, He could have realised a few more surely?
The second was Toby Paterson's exhibition Consensus and Collapse at the Fruitmarket Gallery, now once you have seen some of Paterson's work you have seen it all, his architectural drawings are finished to a high standard and are beautiful in terms of aesthetical value, however, it all seems a bit dated and bland. The blocky colours are distinctly abstract and his architectural style is that of post war modernism, it just may be a question of taste but It did not excite me particularly. What did intrigue me however was the way in which the exhibition was curated. Large raw beams of 4 x 2 were attached to the ceiling came down like a 3 dimensional frame that became part of the fabric of the building, quite apt for Paterson's subject matter. In which he had glass works, drawings that were sandwiched in between two or in some case were on the glass. This way of curating the exhibition made the whole exhibition a more interesting and memorable experience, exploring the different avenues of drawings and mock ups. Deffinately an idea to keep in mind for the future when considering curatoral options.
