John Beagles is part of a legendry duo called Beagles and Ramsay, the two Glaswiegian Artists have caused some what of a controversey in the art world particularly concerning the work Black Pudding, Self Portraits (2004) were they served up a combined black pudding made from a pint of each of the artists blood to the audience of their opening show...
‘The gallery manager in New York didn’t realise what was going on until we started doing it. She threatened to stop us due to health and safety regulations. The other problem was that we had to smuggle the blood into the U.S. because you’re not allowed to import blood products and we didn’t have enough time before the performance to have the blood taken there.’ Ramsay
No matter what you think about the pair this work really has pushed the boundaries of what we consider art and surprisingly in this desensitised world have still managed to produce shock provoking art.
Aswell as this they do produce some more comparitively more timid artwork to put a big middle finger up at their critics when they question their validity as artists. Uncle Chop Chop is a leather bound magazine comprising the works of such big names as David Shrigley, Nathaniel Mellors and Olaf Breuning and contains a series of drawings photos and general scibblings of the artists involved. They are available at their various Uncle Chop Chop shows that they have around scotland at different intervals throughout the year. I have been lucky enough to go to one, it is a healthy mix of performance, music and visual art. To be continued...
