14.1.2011 Dirk Bell, Baltic

Dirk Bell
FREELOVE 2010
Steel sculpture on glass pedestal
120 x 60 x 60cm pedestal, 60 x 60 x 60 cm top

Initially visiting the Baltic to look at the work of Anslam Keifer, I was pleasently surprised to descover the work of Dirk Bell, on one of the lower levels of the gallery. I found myself walking around the exhibition hating some of it but loving other parts of it. Natuarally I was drawn to bells three dimensional work as aposed to his paintings. The paintings, although a comment on control in society, were too Orwellian and blatant that they were bordering on cliched. On the other hand, his sculptures were abstract and more tactile conveying the meaning of his work through the juxtaposition of conflicting materials, subtly referencing his concepts through texture and form. Bells sculptures FREELOVE 2010 and FREELOVE 2010 were a particular highlight of the exhibition for me.

Bells Work will be on show at the Modern Institute, Glasgow until the 19/02/2011.
